Our History

The Olilim community originally was both a subsistence and pastoral community. But because of its proximity to the dry karamoja corridor and after the fall of the Idi Amin government in 1979, the Marauding Karimojong warriors managed to acquire ammunitions which they used to terrorize the neighbouring communities and Olilim was the worst affected through cattle rustling, raping of women and sometime senseless killing of innocent people.

They would do arson and stealing food creating food shortage and displacing people. The Teso people in this locality were forced to flee for refuge elsewhere and those who could not go far were confined into Internally Displaced People’s camps until recently. From 2008 the government of Uganda began disarmament program and some peace has returned and people are getting settled. They are impoverished people but are hardworking and if given help are able to uplift themselves.

Because of the instability many school drop outs were registered and girls getting married at a tender age of 12 years of age as a result there are many child mothers in the community.

Before the advent of cattle rustling the people used ox-ploughs for opening land for agriculture, with their absence they have resorted to rudimentary tools like hand hoes for digging which cannot open large farms. Coupled with the above the climatic conditions have not been favourable and sometimes there is prolonged drought or floods a phenomenon that affects harvest resulting into famine.

To survive many have taken to charcoal burning which has caused deforestation, a condition that OLAFORENT seeks to address adequately.
